An acetate is a salt or ester formed by the combination of acetic acid with a base or alcohol. In cosmetics, acetates may be derived from various sources including fish liver oil, egg yolks, butter, plant oils, or produced synthetically. The term also refers to the conjugate base ion with the chemical formula C₂H₃O₂⁻.
