Alizarin (CI 58000) is an organic compound of the anthraquinone class, historically used as a red dye for textile fabrics. It was originally derived from the roots of madder plants (Rubia spp.) but in 1869 became the first natural dye to be produced synthetically, and is now manufactured synthetically.
