Alizarin Red S (CI 58005) is a water-soluble sodium salt of alizarin sulfonic acid (C14H7NaO7S), discovered by Graebe and Liebermann in 1871. It is used in histology to stain calcium deposits in tissues and in geology to stain and differentiate carbonate minerals.
