Buttermilk is a fermented dairy drink traditionally made from the liquid remaining after churning butter from cream, or modernly produced by inoculating pasteurised milk with lactic acid bacteria. It has a characteristic slightly sour taste due to lactic acid fermentation. As a dairy product, it is vegetarian but not vegan.
