Citrus Red 2 is a synthetic azo dye permitted by the US FDA since 1956 to colour the skin of oranges. It is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 2B carcinogen, meaning it is possibly carcinogenic to humans. It is not approved for use in food itself, only on orange peel.
