Glyceryl hydroxystearate, also known as glyceryl monohydroxystearate, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C21H42O5, formed by esterification of hydroxystearic acid with glycerol. It appears as a whitish or pale yellow powder and is used as an emulsifier and thickener in cosmetics and skin-care products; the hydroxystearic acid feedstock can be derived from plant oils (e.g. castor oil) or, less commonly, from animal fat.
