Mauveine, also known as aniline purple or Perkin's mauve, was one of the first synthetic dyes, discovered serendipitously by William Henry Perkin in 1856 while attempting to synthesise quinine. It was among the first chemical dyes to be mass-produced and played a pivotal role in the development of the synthetic dye industry.
