Sudan IV is a lysochrome (fat-soluble) diazo dye used for the staining of lipids, triglycerides, and lipoproteins on frozen and paraffin sections. It appears as reddish-brown crystals with a melting point of 199 °C and maximum absorption at 520 nm. It is a synthetic organic dye derived entirely from non-animal sources.
