Kermes is a natural red dye derived from the dried bodies of scale insects of the genus Kermes (primarily Kermes vermilio), which feed on kermes oak trees. It contains the pigment kermesic acid and was historically one of the most important red dyes in Europe before being largely replaced by cochineal. It is identified as C.I. Natural Red 3.
