Is Maltol vegetarian?

Maltol is a naturally occurring or synthetically produced flavour compound with a sweet, caramel-like odour, used as a flavour enhancer in food. It is approved by Codex Alimentarius and the US FDA (INS 636), though not currently listed as an EU-approved additive under that number.

An ingredient is considered vegetarian if it avoids components derived from killing an animal.
