Methyl Red (2-(N,N-dimethyl-4-aminophenyl)azobenzenecarboxylic acid) is a synthetic azo dye and pH indicator that is red in solutions below pH 4.4, yellow above pH 6.2, and orange in between, with a pKa of 5.1. It is used in analytical chemistry and microbiology (e.g., the methyl red test) and is classified as IARC Group 3 regarding carcinogenicity.
