Rose Bengal (4,5,6,7-tetrachloro-2',4',5',7'-tetraiodofluorescein) is a synthetic xanthene dye used as a histological stain and ophthalmic diagnostic agent. Its sodium salt is used in eye drops to stain damaged corneal and conjunctival cells, and it is also used to distinguish live from dead foraminifera in microscopic analysis.
