Sphingolipids are a class of lipids containing a sphingoid base backbone, involved in cell membrane structure and signal transduction; in cosmetics they can be derived from plant, animal, or synthetic/fermentation sources.

An ingredient is considered vegan if it contains no animal-derived components at any point in its production.
