Sulforhodamine 101 (SR101) is a red fluorescent synthetic dye used in neurophysiology, particularly as a counterstain for astrocytes in calcium imaging experiments. It also labels myelinating oligodendrocytes and has been reported to affect neuronal excitability, requiring cautious use. It is derived entirely from synthetic precursors.
