Ethidium bromide is a synthetic intercalating agent widely used as a fluorescent tag in molecular biology, particularly for staining DNA in agarose gel electrophoresis. It fluoresces orange under UV light, with intensity greatly increased upon binding DNA, and under the name homidium it has also been used in veterinary medicine to treat trypanosomiasis in cattle.
