A carotenoid pigment with an orange-red color, the ethyl ester of beta-apo-8'-carotenic acid. It occurs in small quantities in some plants but is mainly produced commercially by chemical synthesis from apocarotenal, and is used as a food and cosmetic colorant (E160f).
