Hematoxylin is a naturally occurring dye extracted from the heartwood of the logwood tree (Haematoxylum campechianum). Its oxidised form, hematein, is the active staining agent; together with eosin it forms the basis of H&E staining, the most widely used stain in histopathology.

An ingredient is considered vegan if it contains no animal-derived components at any point in its production.
