Plain caramel (E150a) is a dark brown food colorant produced by the controlled heat treatment of food-grade carbohydrates such as sucrose, glucose syrup, or fructose. No acids, alkalis, or ammonium or sulfite compounds are used in its production. The carbohydrate source is typically plant-derived.
