Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant prepared by sulfation of lauryl alcohol followed by neutralization with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide. Lauryl alcohol may be sourced from coconut or palm oil or from petrochemical feedstocks, making the origin variable but generally considered vegan.
