Bile Acids are steroid acids synthesized in the liver of mammals from cholesterol, or alternatively produced through microbial fermentation; they are conjugated with taurine or glycine to form bile salts. When sourced from animal bile, their production is linked to animal slaughter, making this ingredient of uncertain but often animal origin.

An ingredient is considered vegetarian if it avoids components derived from killing an animal.
