Estrone (E1) is a naturally occurring steroidal estrogen and minor female sex hormone synthesised from cholesterol in the gonads and adrenal glands of mammals. It is found in the urine and ovarian tissue of various animals and has historically been extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. As an animal-derived hormone, it is neither vegan nor vegetarian.
