Sudan II is a lysochrome (fat-soluble) azo dye used for staining of triglycerides in frozen sections and some protein-bound lipids and lipoproteins on paraffin sections. It appears as a red powder with a melting point of 156–158 °C and maximum absorption at 493 nm. It is a synthetic organic dye with no animal-derived components.
