Valeric acid, or pentanoic acid, is a straight-chain alkyl carboxylic acid naturally found in the plant Valeriana officinalis, from which it derives its name. It has an unpleasant odor, but its esters have pleasant fruity fragrances and are used in perfumes, cosmetics, and food flavorings.
