This Privacy Policy explains how CheckVegan ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our website and services at checkvegan.org.

1. Information we collect

We collect the following information when you use CheckVegan:

  • Account information: your name and email address when you create an account to submit a product for vegan certification.
  • Product and ingredient data: ingredient lists and product details you submit for verification.
  • Ingredient checker queries: the ingredient names and lists you enter into the free ingredient checker.
  • Ingredient issue reports: details you submit when reporting a problem with an ingredient classification, including your email address if you choose to provide one.
  • Usage data: pages visited, features used, and basic technical information such as browser type and IP address.

We do not collect payment card details directly. Payments for certification plans are handled by third-party processors.

2. How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • operate the ingredient checker, glossary pages, and verification report lookup;
  • process certification submissions, classify ingredients, and generate verification reports;
  • review and respond to ingredient issue reports and account-related communications;
  • improve and develop our services;
  • comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal data.

3. Verification reports and public data

When a verification report is generated, a public page is created at a permanent URL (e.g. checkvegan.org/verify/VV-2025-XXXXXX). This page contains the product name, the brand name, the verification result, and the date of issue. It does not contain personal contact details.

The CheckVegan ingredient database - ingredient names, classifications, and descriptions - is publicly accessible. This data is not personal data.

4. Data storage and security

Your data is stored on infrastructure hosted in the European Union. We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls.

Supplier documents submitted as part of certification are stored in private, access-controlled storage and are not publicly accessible.

5. Third-party services

We use the following third-party services to operate CheckVegan:

  • Supabase: database and file storage.
  • Cloudflare (Workers): application hosting and content delivery for our website.
  • Google Analytics: website usage analytics, such as pages viewed, traffic sources, and general visitor behaviour. This may involve transferring data to Google in the United States.
  • Google Ads: conversion tracking to measure the performance of our advertising campaigns. This may involve transferring data to Google in the United States.

Each of these providers has their own privacy policy and processes data in accordance with applicable data protection law.

6. Cookies and local storage

We use the following cookies and browser storage:

  • locale: stores your preferred language (English or German). Not personally identifiable.
  • cv_cookie_consent (browser storage): records your cookie preference (accepted or rejected) so we don't ask again. Essential for the banner to function.
  • _ga, _gid and related analytics cookies: set by Google Analytics to measure website usage. These are only set with your consent.
  • _gcl_au and related Google Ads cookies: used to measure advertising campaign performance and conversions. These are only set with your consent.

7. Your rights

If you are based in the European Economic Area or the UK, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • the right to access the personal data we hold about you;
  • the right to correct inaccurate data;
  • the right to request deletion of your data;
  • the right to object to or restrict processing;
  • the right to data portability.

Verification reports are retained indefinitely to support the permanent public verification record.
