Diosgenin is a phytosteroid spirostanol sapogenin obtained by hydrolysis of saponins extracted from the tubers of wild yam species (Dioscorea), used as a precursor in the commercial synthesis of steroid compounds such as progesterone and cortisone.

An ingredient is considered vegan if it contains no animal-derived components at any point in its production.
