Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a semi-synthetic cellulose ether derived from alkali-treated plant cellulose reacted with methyl chloride and propylene oxide. It is used as a thickener, emulsifier, film-former, and as a vegetarian/vegan alternative to gelatin in hard capsules.
